Mix: RA 147 DJ Pete [Scion]

Wow! This latest one from the RA lot looks pretty exciting! Coming from long time Hardwax worker and one of Berlin's 'faces' over the years, DJ Pete [Kuschnereit]. Pete never disappoints either in his excellent DJ sets, his Scion sets alongside Rene Lowe [aka Vainqueur] or his live collaborations with Sleeparchive. And he's also one of the nicest artists I've ever had the pleasure of chatting with to boot! Grab this now!

Event: System presents Cocoon in the Park [Leeds-UK] Sat 27 June 2009.

So I've been told by a very reliable source that System, the superb techno night in Leeds, is putting on an all day, outdoor event at Temple Newsam in Leeds on Saturday June 27th! The event is gonna run from midday till 11pm [and I'm guessing there might be a little afters somewhere!] and will feature Cocoon head honcho & old Leeds techno club, The Orbit legend, Sven Vath!! There are more artists still to be 100% confirmed so I'll save any unnecessary rumours for now, but this is quite simply an event not to be missed really, simple as. I'll update the line-up as soon as I hear when the other artists are confirmed so keep checking back over the next 2 or 3 weeks.

Set in the grounds of a 450 year old mansion house, the festival site—an area of outstanding natural beauty surrounded by forrests and a lake, and you can expect the usual breathtaking Cocoon production including dancers, full lighting show and sound provided by Funktion-1.

A limited amount of discount £35 early bird tickets are now on sale at http://www.wegottickets.com/event/45902

This is a ticketed event only. There will be no paying on the door or guestlist facility available on the day.

Technology: technoBox iPhone 3G App

Just flicking through the App Store on iTunes and found what looks to be an interesting addition to my iPhone music apps, technoBox [303 808 909 studio].

It costs £5.99 and is getting some pretty fine reviews so I think it looks like a winner! Click the link for all the blurb directly in iTunes.

Interview: Sleeparchive.

I recently had the pleasure of asking Roger Semsroth aka Sleeparchive a few questions just before he jetted off to Japan to play a couple of gigs. This was what he had to say!

1. First off, I heard a rumour that Sleeparchive is actually two people, not necessarily working together, but both putting things out as Sleeparchive. Any truth in this?

at the moment sleeparchive is only me. i released music by other people a while ago. "infrared glow" was produced by a friend of mine and on "research" is an edit made by another good friend. i asked both to release the music under their regular artist names but both wanted me to release the tracks as sleeparchive.

2. Are you a native Berliner?

yes, i was born in east berlin in 1976. i lived near dusseldorf from 2001-2004 but apart from that time i lived in berlin all my live.

3. What was the first album you ever bought?

i can`t remember my first album. i grew up in the GDR so i was not able to buy most of the music i liked as a kid.when the wall fell in 1989 every east german citizen got 100 marks. from that money i bought "front by front" by "front 242" and 3 "the cure" albums. all 4 records are still in my record collection and i still love all 4 albums. it`s really strange if i think that i have had those albums for 20 years in november this year.

4. How long have you been producing?

i`ve got my first synth in 1990. my mother bought me a yamaha sy55. the first ok track i ever recorded was in 1993 i guess. all before is simply terrible. i really wanted to do music like "front 242" or "leaether strip" but i was not able to do it. so all i recorded was really terrible wave made by an 15 years old kid.

5. Whats your favourite machine/program for producing?

my favourites are still the kr55 and the sh101. i can`t get enough of both machines.

6. Do you produce full time or do you work as well?

i started working again last year. after some years of making music only i was really in the mood to go to work again. it feels great to do something normal for normal money. really often when i play a gig i think to myself that it is a bit strange that i get the same money my dad gets when he works a whole month + my dad works hard and i get money for what i do as hobby.

7. What is your favourite club and/or city in the world to play at?

i don`t have a favourite city or club. playing in the UK is always great. i like the beer the food and the people. also france is always really good. but only for the people not for anything else. when i played the UK the first time i really expected the people to hate what i do. i thought the UK is always about banging techno all time. but i was wrong.

8. And where would you really like to play but as of yet, have not?

no idea.....perhaps the old so36 in the early eighties.

9. Where did the Hardwax connection come from?

i've bought my records at hardwax since 1995. over the years some of the guys became good friends. they also distributed my skanfrom releases before i started working on my first sleeparchive tracks. for techno music it`s still my favourite shop.

10. Are you still doing shows with Pete Kuschnereit?

yes, from time to time. it`s so much more fun to travel together. i think this is one of the things i really hate about travelling. i always travel by myself and really often it is so boring. pete is a good friend of mine and we always have big fun when we share the stage.

11. What do those shows consist of? Are they any different from a normal Sleeparchive set?

it`s different because pete brings his 909 and some records.often he is djing after our live set. so it`s sleeparchive + 909. the sets we play together are more for the dancefloor than a regular sleeparchive gig. and it`s more improvisational.

12. What do you think of the current 'minimal' scene?

i don`t follow it. i don`t like it as much as other music.

13. Why have you never gone down the easy money route of DJ'ing as well as playing live?

easy money? i don`t think so. everytime i talk to a dj they tell me that they play music for the people. so i would be a terrible dj because i would play only the tracks i like. and this can get on people nerves really fast in a techno context. so i think i wouldn`t get any bookings after playing out 3 times :)

14. What artists are impressing you at the moment or over the last year?

i`m more and more back into the music i come from and i like guitar and noise more and more. "sudden infant" was my favourite concert last year. my favourite band is "a place to bury strangers". some weeks ago i saw "wavves". really good concert.

15. Jeff Mills is obviously a fan, seen as how he asked you to be one of his guests at his Womb [Tokyo] residency. How was that experience?

that was amazing. i really like the music jeff mills makes. more the newer than the older stuff. he is a great guy and i have a lot of respect for what he is doing. he dj`d after me and when his set was over after 3 hours i thought "what??". for me it felt like 10 minutes. so i think i was really into it.

16. What inspires you to make the music you do?

not much. i just play with the machines until i get something i like. i don`t think much when i do music.

17. How do you relax away from music?

playing with my cat while watching tv is very relaxing. also cooking is great fun. but however, making music is the most relaxing thing for me. so there is not really a need to relex because i make music in every free minute.

18. What have you got lined up for 2009?

a 10" is coming in 2 weeks and i did zzz010 last month. it was a tape limited to 10 copies i gave only to friends or people i know. i don`t have any further plans. i work on some other projects again. perhaps i work on some new skanfrom tracks... or something under a completly new name. just last week i finished a track for a hungarien fanzine limited to 30 copies.

19. Finally, give me some of your guilty pleasures.

my favourite actor is james stewart and my favourite movie is "it`s a wonderful life". THE christmas movie.......

Many thanks to Roger for taking the time to answer these questions. As Roger stated there will be a new 10" coming soon and I'll just say good luck on finding zzz010! Roger can also be found playing live at Tresor in Berlin on Sat 21st March, and a little further in the future on Thu 7th May, alongside good friend, DJ Pete & Mark Ernestus at Honest Jons in London. So if you're in the area, go see him!

Mix & Event: Martin Landsky. Podcast 006. Save the Cannibals [NYC] Sat 28 Feb

This weeks new podcast from the Cannibals is up and comes from one of this weeks TWO special guests at the club in New York, Martin Landsky. The other guest is a guy who seems to be everywhere at the moment, Konrad Black! Landsky's mix is really good and in many peoples opinions is possibly the best yet. It's a toss up between this one and Cassy's for me.

Wismix 002 - Sebastian Wilck - February 2009.

Here is the second installment of the Wismix series and its a bit of a monster one!  It's a three and a half hour, 45 track minimal techno bomb mixed live at Watergate club in Berlin on the 4th February 2009 by resident, Sebastian Wilck.

Sebastian wasn't always a minimal techno DJ.  He actually started out as a drum n bass kid back in the golden days of Berlin's 'Hard Edged' parties.  As time went by he became engrossed in the Berlin techno scene and soon became an intern at Watergate, where he sat every weekend, in the tiny room at the back of the office, in front of 2 old radio speakers and a sub woofer, either programming his own tracks, or dj'ing with Final Scratch for hours on end!

He is now a firm resident at the club and plays at least once a month, and has done for the last 3 years.  He also plays at other clubs in Berlin of course including the obligatory den of inequity thats is Bar 25!

He also had one release out at the end of 2006 on Nick Höppner's label, Just Recordings.  The release was called 'Fur den Garten EP'.

I've had this mix in my possession for around a week now and it's been on almost constant play, such is the quality of the tracks and the mixing.  I hope you all agree!  Enjoy............

Music: Someone Else - Elsewhere EP [Foundsound 20]

[foundsound-20]

someone else
elsewhere ep
(remixes by michal ho and kriss)

release date: march 30 2009

sean o'neal (a.k.a. someone else) got started djing in philadelphia amidst his local piers such as king britt, josh wink, pete moss, rob paine, and the list goes on. and then someone else became known for gritty minimal techno hits like "bedroom eyes", "picture perfect", his remix of heartz4's "intimacy girl", and many others. but now is another time, and someone else wants to bring back some of the deep tech-house vibes that he was raised on in his hometown, yet still remaining himself all along.

sooooo, that said, foundsound cofounder someone else delivers more bomb-diggity good times with elsewhere ep. this time, he delves into a more organic and soulful side of loopy dancefloor tech-house suitable for the tasteful clubs and (maybe more so) the outdoors -- incorporating a smoother and catchier side of his trademark cut-up vocals. plus, you get a wicked remix by michal ho of tuning spork fame, and a jaw-dropping digital bonus remix by unfoundsound’s latest pride-and-joy, kriss.

on a1 – “sunny day in smallville” -- you get a 10:15 long-play with a deep progression that'll make a dancefloor spin and grin. this anthemic chugger drives with a rolling bassline, a bouncy swing, dense yet dissonant percussion, and sliced 'n' diced vocals which are rich and emotive. it's simple, tracky and complex all at once, and it makes an excellent dj tool.

on b1 – “funny day elsewhere -- you get a catchy, vocal snippy tech-house joyride with a dubby bassline, blurry bongos and soulful delight.

on b2 – “funny day elsewhere (michal ho remix)” -- the tuning spork mofo keeps it housey, bouncy and abstract.

then the digital bonus track – “sunny day in smallville (kriss remix)” -- the young italian newbie dishes out a mind-numbing minimal club-stormer.

go ahead and poop in your pants.

Music: Miskate - Drillbit EP [Foundsound 19]

[foundsound-19]

Miskate
Drillbit ep
(remix by Barem)

Foundsound’s own co-founder, a shy and beautiful American supergirl known as Miskate, returns with a fresh, new twist on her buggy trademark sound. Plus, Argentina’s Barem of Foundsound and Minus fame dishes out a minimal tech-house bomb that is an emotively mesmerizing remix.

Now with more than 15 records on labels like Karloff, Einmaleins, Microcosm, Alphahouse, Roman Photo, Wit and Foundsound, Drillbit ep might be Miskate’s strongest release to date. Miskate proves to have an amazing ability to take only a few significant samples -- whether it’s a field recording or her own voice -- along with simple groovy rhythms, and spawn irresistible works-of-art that djs can appreciate. Ranging form loopy dancefloor mayhem to deeply emotional abstractionism, Miskate’s Drillbit ep is powerfully enticing.

on a1 – “Drillbit” -- you get a loopy dancefloor gem shaped by tribally bongos, a bouncy bassline and a driving tech-house beat -- meanwhile all being relentlessly overshadowed by the melodic snarling and roaring of an electric drill. During the riveting breakdown, the intense wailing of the drill pleasurably cuts through your body while forcing your hands happily into the air.

on a2 – “What You Want” -- she goes deep and groovy with her own oddly pitched vocals, a captivating bassline and pleasantly haunting atmospherics -- moving with a sort of Villalobos-like structure along with profound emotions captured in the melodies of her voice, both melancholy and blissful at the same time.

on b1 – “What You Want (Barem remix)” -- the Minus superkid delivers a tech-house long-play fueled by bongo drums, Miskate’s stirring vocals and a climactic breakdown that’ll make audiences rejoice on the dancefloor.

So c’mon boys and girls! Take yourself and your audience on a tripped-out joyride through the wondrous worlds of Miskate and Barem!

Mix: Lets Go Outside. ElectronicGroove Podcast 064

EG 064 - Let's Go Outside
Steve Schieberl was born in Milan, Italy and is now living in Portland, Oregon. He took the moniker "Let's Go Outside" as a tribute to his fascination with outdoor activities.
Let's Go Outside started DJing and producing electronic music as a teenager in the early nineties in southern California. He was picked up by Glasgow-based Soma Quality Recordings in 2006, receiving support from luminaries such as Andrew Weatherall, Laurent Garnier, and Ivan Smagghe. He's followed up on some early releases and remixes with the early 2008 release of his debut album, "A Picnic with the Hunters", on Soma Records, pairing that with a successful European tour performing for sold out crowds at venues including Fabric, The Loft, The Arches and Sub Club. He's continued with a steady stream of releases and has now started his own imprint, Slant Records.

This mix is a one hour showcase of music recently made or released by Let's Go Outside and his friends in the Pacific Northwest USA. It debuts new pieces from Let's Go Outside and the Cells and Catalog projects, alongside material from forthcoming releases on Slant Records. Cells is a collaboration project between Let's Go Outside and Seattle-based From 0-1's Milkplant and Sone. "Catalog" is Schieberl's new alias for electro-based music. This set represents a particular flavor of techno in Cascadia and what is in store for 2009 from this corner of the world..

Music: Andres Zacco. Seated Hopping EP [Airdrop 07]

Artist : Andres Zacco
Label : Airdrop
Title : Seated Hopping EP
Release Date: Feb/March 2009
Format : 12" Vinyl & Digital

A. Andres Zacco : Seated Hopping
B. Andres Zacco : Untitled

Samples:

The AIRDROP legacy grows and grows, with one tight 'n' crisp single release after the next, dropping into the veins of the musically conscious and electronically versed. Airy bubbles that make your head spin included!
After showcasing the amazingly active scene in the United States, paying tribute to the brimming hubs of the US underground which are bringing forward more exciting artists then ever before right now, AIRDROP refocuses on its creative birth place: Argentina, the up-and-coming South American country where label head honcho Paulo Reachi started hunting down the first signings. Getting Andres Zacco on board shows that the label is steering towards an absolute high point!

The Pergamino-born Argentine producer is not an unknown to the scene. His highly descriptive, funkily elusive, reduced yet very driving house sounds that are finely layered and always utterly tasteful in their composition have surfaced on labels as varied and renowned as Stock5, BPitch, Alphahouse, Esperanza and Traut Muzik. Andres also releases on his own imprint, Greener, which features works by Lineas de Nazca, Kai-Maan, Franco Cinelli and soon Jacek Sienkiewicz to name a few involved. As part of an exciting new wave of Argentinean vanguard sound producers, he, alone and together with studio partner Lucas Mari, manages to stun a receptive audience not only with the array of productions and remixes he has been releasing since 2006 but also with his gripping DJ sets.

His debut on AIRDROP is a well-paced two-tracker which stuns with its versatility and tasteful arrangements. The groove of the opener, the funnily named 'Seated Hopping' grips you in the underbelly and shuffles you upside down with its deep, dubby flavor that will have you hopping on your seats in no time, the cherry on the icing being the dark, down-pitched vocals that haunt you on the rise. The "Untitled" track is a state of mind definitely not unknown to those in the know, and this time is virtually impossible to keep seated. Flurry filtered vocals warp in and out while the pitchy groove gains momentum, intensifying the mobilizing effects of the track immensely as you rise and shine to the infectious, stripped down, channeled disco groove. Zacco at his finest will have you gagging for more. Hold on tight!

Music: Remute. Joking About Death EP [Shooting Elvis 004]

Artist : Remute
Label : Shooting Elvis
Title : Joking About Death EP
Release Date: March 2nd 2009
Format : 12" Vinyl & Digital

A1. Remute - Joking About Death
A2. Remute - Joking About Death [James Kronier Remix]
B1. Remute - Zotvuu

Remute returns to Shooting Elvis but this time with his own EP, delivering a straight-up, no-nonsense techno cut in the form of "Joking About Death". Dabbling in warehouse style rides and invading fx, this is outer-space techno not for the faint hearted!

Flip to the B and James Kronier steps up to rework the original into a heavyweight bass kick led, organic percussive, howling grinder, another dancefloor stomper! The final cut on this 3 track EP is the cheeky instrumental,   "Zotvuu". Layered with live tricks and stutters, a perfect crowd teaser that completes this well rounded EP.

Shooting Elvis is the new imprint from precocious twenty-two-year-old UK talent Tommy-Four-Seven. The label already has contributions from Remute, Mark Broom, Sebastian Roya and James Kronier with tracks from more deep techno luminaries to be announced.

Fans range from Speedy J or Chris Liebing to Satoshi Tomiie, the latter both licenced Shooting Elvis tracks for their latest mix compilations.

Music: Intrusion feat Paul St Hilaire. Little Angel [Echospace Detroit]

Artist : Intrusion
Label : Echospace Detroit
Title : Little Angel
Release Date: February 2nd 2009
Format : 12" Vinyl & Digital

A1. Intrusion feat Paul St Hilaire - Little Angel
A2. Intrusion - Angel Version
B. Intrusion - A Night to Remember
Digital Exclusive - Kingstons Burning

Samples:

http://www.myflashfetish.com/playlist/18000812

This is the third and final installment in the intrusion 12" series from Stephen Hitchell, culled from the new critically acclaimed album, "The Seduction Of Silence".

The A side explores more of a traditional dub & roots vibe and features a stunning vocal performance from Paul St. Hilaire aka Tikiman (False Tuned, Rhythm & Sound, Burial Mix) on "Little Angel" a song both personal and inviting which showcases his beautiful voice in a somewhat new direction, a truly heart warming piece.

The following "Angel Version" adds a 4/4 thump and a bassline deeper than the ocean, while the low end throbs the track develops into a mighty conga rhythm session and just takes hold of your mind and your feet, truly hypnotizing. The B side's "A Night To Remember" was inspired by Stephen's performance at the 2008 Labyrinth festival in Japan, its a deep affair showcasing the dreamiest sides of horizontal house music. This is music which clearly focuses on every fine detail, filled with loads of roots, space, unbelievable low end and a sonic warmth we‘ve come to love from the Echospace analog signature.

Here are Intrusion/Echospaces upcoming dates:

Mix: dEAPp. Live in a Kitchen. January 2009.

This mix is the result of a friend & myself deciding that a mix was long overdue from us so the decks were set up, Serato was loaded, tea was made, and away we went for a lost afternoon of beats.  We tag teamed 3 or 4 tunes each at a time. The mix is all over the place with no programming or preparation, and it ends abruptly due to the recording device failing but I kinda liked it. Hope you do too!

News: Underground TV M_nus Special. Sun 1st February.

I've mentioned this before but it should be mentioned again now.  Tomorrow night, so thats Sunday 1st February at the time of writing, at 9pm on the Propeller channel [channel 195] on Sky TV in the UK, Underground TV presents  a M_nus special.

It's half an hour long and will feature interviews with Richie Hawtin, Gaiser, Heartthrob, Marc Houle, Ambivalent & Adam from Tractile as well as footage from the recent Contakt Amsterdam show!

You can also go to their website for more information and links to Youtube to watch the previous shows, as well as these new ones as soon as they are uploaded.

Mix: Brand New M_nus Music Podcast

M_nus have just started a new monthly podcast series available through iTunes.  At the end of each month there will be a new episode done by one of the M_nus artists, staff members or close friends of the label.  That could be a lot of people then!!  And judging by the first podcast it's not the usual M_nus fare that you might be expecting, as it delves way back into the featured artists musical background showing what influenced them to get where they are today. Every podcast will be enhanced so you should keep an eye on the artwork window in iTunes for additional info. Excellent!

The first installment is provided by Marc Houle and is an hour long.

Mix: Fabrizio Maurizi [M_nus] - Dec 2008 Mix.

A new mix from Richie Hawtin's latest protege, Italy's Fabrizio Maurizi.  I really like every mix I've heard from this guy so far and this one hasn't disappointed me neither!  Real nice flowing 2 hour long mix.  Think we'll be hearing quite a lot from this guy what with the musical juggernaut that is M-nus behind him!  And I for one am glad of that!  Just try and put the plain weird Italian 'MC' who suddenly starts talking after an hour and a half, out of your mind!  He doesn't do it much thankfully but the things he says are bizarre!

He's got a couple of upcoming gigs in the UK soon as well!

Fri 6th Feb - The Lightbox [London]
Fri 20th Feb - Talk to Trevor @ DQ [Sheffield]

Music: Juno Minimal Weekly Podcast.

This 'service' started in November from the Juno Records store and is updated at least once a week. Its a real nice way to listen to some of Juno's favourite minimal releases of that week, and occasionally slightly older tracks.  This weeks edition opened with Maurizio's classic 'M5' for example.  Each episode lasts around an hour and has tracklisting embedded in the info of the podcast, as well as spoken over the mix in a very quick and unobtrusive manner.  Click on the link to subscribe through iTunes.

or if you don't use iTunes then click here to stream the shows:

Right, so here it is.  The first installment of hopefully many in this blog's exclusive new mix series.  And I've been lucky enough to secure the quite considerable talents one Mr Samuli Kemppi, from Helsinki, Finland.

I've been following Samuli's output for a couple of years now and he simply never fails to impress me with either his production or his live sets.  He's one of those 'always on form' kinda guys where you're always guaranteed top quality.  And thats exactly what I wanted to start this new mix series.  So who better to go to?

Samuli is well known for his very 'Berghain' style of sound.  So much so that his track 'Vangel', was one of the tracks Marcel Dettmann included on one of the best DJ mixes of last year, Berghain 2 on Ostgut Tonträger

This mix is a veritable who's who of vital, currently relative artists like Peter Van Hoesen, Donato Dozzy, Mike Parker & Ben Klock.  But Samuli doesn't forget the past and picks out some absolute stone cold classics by CJ Bolland (remember him?!) from 1991, a Green Velvet remix from 1996, a couple from LFO original, Gez Varley and some fella called Jeff Mills in X101 mode, also from way back in 1991!

Put your headphones on.  Turn them up.  And listen to this superb mix by a producer you are sure to hear a LOT more of in the future!

Samuli also very kindly answered a few questions:

1. Whats the scene like in Finland?

Couple interesting things going on here, but in general it's quite boring. All the interesting domestic names don't get to play here; good thing is that they get to play abroad every now and then. Since Finland is a small country and scene is small, it seems to be in hands of too few people. You know, only friends get to play. Really bored of that shit. I don't think that Finland is anyway target for me and my music. If my record sells 30 copies in Finland, that means somebody has already bought double copies.. Electrohouse and trance are still big here, which is pretty sad in a way.

2. Do you make music fulltime or do you work as well?

At the moment, I can't think of doing music as a full time profession. I'm a graphic and industrial designer. That pays the loans and bills. That also gives me the freedom to do music that has not so high commercial potential. We'll see what the future brings along. If I get to play more often abroad, I might think of doing music full time for couple years.

3. What have you got upcoming releasewise/gigwise?

Lots of new stuff coming this spring! New 12" edition of Kaapo series on Pakkas Levyt titled 'Ultrakaapo EP' with remixes from Marcel Dettmann and Monoder (aka Jussi-Pekka). Then 12" EP from new label named Pond and also 12" EP from Richard Brophys new label Komisch. My remix for Donor/Truss on Synewave is already out in digital sales, 12" should be out soon.

Gigwise nothing special. Hopefully by new releases I get to play abroad more often. One thing I have to mention though. I'm doing a one off event in Finland tiled "Domestic Techno Inspection". I've had this "Domestic Techno Inspection" thing as a part of my radio show for quite a long time now; point is to play fresh domestic stuff, unreleased and upcoming tracks from future stars and house hold names. So, I wanted to go bit further with the idea and on April 3rd there's first DTI night with 10 live PA's on the same night. The line-up is quite brilliant and if you need to catch up with finnish techno, DTI is the party to go to!

4. How long have you been producing/Dj'ing?

I started dj'ing in the late 80's, so, this is my 20th anniversary year as a dj. I started producing in late 90's. First releases were under name Sam & Gigi and it was house. That's probably something that people who like my solo releases don't know. Sam & Gigi tracks are still being licensed, which is quite bizarre in my opinion. Totally different direction than in my own more recent stuff. Also did couple 12"'s under name A.M. Specialists with couple friends back then.

5. What is your favourite production tool or machine?

Mac Book Pro & Logic Pro. Solid! I do all producing with Logic and live PA's with Ableton. Sold all my hardware some years ago. Much easier for me this way.

6. Who has influenced you musically?

Ahh, soooo many people. Just played 5,5 hours gig last friday and it was all about influences and inspiration. Maybe instead if doing name dropping, people should check that out since I happened to record the set! Here's link to the Boogie Monster:

7. Any plans on moving where everyone goes these days?  Berlin!  Or anywhere else?

Nope, we just bought a new flat (which isn't ready until Aug 2010 though) and quite happy here in Helsinki. If I was a single and not father, then Berlin might be good idea.. Finland is my home and probably will always be.

8. How did you record the mix?

Stack of proper 12"'s, pair of Technics and my trustworthy Ecler Nuo mixer. No edits, just live mixing. Recorded with Logic and used light compression and limiter to the final mix.

Thankyou Sam!

Technology: Cubase RC App coming for iPhone.

One of the biggest surprises to have dropped during day 1 of the NAMM 2009 was news of the Steinberg's remote control iPhone app for Cubase, called Cubase RC.  The app will run on an iPhone or an iPod Touch and will connect via Wi-Fi.

The app has two main screens, one for transport & one for arrangement view.

That means you can control playback, arm recording, metronome, cycle & markers in the Transport screen, and the Arranger view allows you to trigger sections of a track.

And best of all, the Cubase RC app will be free, arriving in the iTunes App Store sometime in May.

News: Underground TV Channel.

I've only just found out about this TV program on the Propeller TV channel [Channel 195 on Sky], but it looks like I've found it just in time!  The program is called simply, Underground.

This Sunday night [18th January] at 9pm, there is an Amsterdam Dance Event special.  You can also go to their website for more information and links to Youtube to watch the previous shows!  There are two more new episodes due to air soon, the first of which is a M_nus special with interviews with Hawtin, Gaiser, Heartthrob, Marc Houle, Ambivalent & Adam from Tractile as well as footage from the recent Contakt Amsterdam show!  According to the program makers this is being aired on Sun 25th January.  The season finale, which has Luciano, Reboot and Federico Molinari, Ricardo Villalobos & Zip featuring should be airing on one of the following Sundays but I'll clarify that on here when I know for certain.  Certainly looks like one not to be missed!

Music: Miss Jools - Back to Back Vol Three [Mobilee]

This looks like a must have release in my book as I tend to love most of what comes out of the Mobilee stable! Its gonna be a 2 disc affair with the first disc being an unmixed selection of some of the labels big hits of last year, and the second disc being a mix by Miss Jools but with a bit of a twist. She's asked a variety of producers to remix their favourites from the Mobilee catalogue and she has created the mix with the results. Nice idea!

A DJ mix from Oslo Records' head honcho, Federico Molinari in Italy on New Years Eve! Only 66 minutes long but a good 66 minutes!

News: Beatport 4.0 released on January 21st.

This is Beatport's own blurb on their upcoming Beatport 4.0 release.

On Wednesday 21st January the long-awaited Beatport 4.0 will launch.   In this final unveiling of the site there are over 50 enhancements that include some of the most popular user-requested features.  These include embedded artwork, enhanced preview quality (48k to 96k), docking capabilities for playlists and My Beatport, RSS feeds to every page on Beatport, deeplinks, keyboard commands and content filters.

The power is back in your hands.

Check a sneak peek trailer video of the new Beatport and watch a tutorial of the new features here.

To sum up, the newly remastered Beatport 4.0 will include features and functionality that engages all five senses.

The first highlighted sense offers the ability to hear more music with an enhanced music player.

Next, there are new tools to satisfy any DJ’s taste for good music through increased ease of navigation, with new and powerful filters to find DJ mixes and recently added content.

DJs can engage their sense of smell by sniffing out the latest and hottest tracks through dramatically improved filtering of favorite labels and artists.

And finally, one of the most requested features from our users is now a reality: the Hold Bin, where you can see and hold your “maybe” tracks for purchase at a later date.

This month Twaddle bring the Montreal techno producer, Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts into Leeds. Known for his collaboration with the Mutek festival in Montreal and for his releases on Federico Molinari's Oslo Records, Circus Company as well as Montreal's own Musique Risquee, this will be a top night! The amount of great bookings in Leeds these days is just stunning!

Event: Ketoloco [Leeds] Marc Antona. Fri 6-2-09

Another good looking night, this time from Ketoloco bringing in French producer and stalwart of Mobilee Records, Marc Antona! Technology: SimplifyMedia iPhone 3G App.

This is what iPhone's are made for!

Downloaded this app today and basically, it enables your entire iTunes library on your home computer to stream onto your iPhone 3G from anywhere in the world! It works with wi-fi, 3G and even EDGE connections, but obviously only use cellular if you are in your home country or your gonna get bills for thousands! Use free wifi though and you can listen carefree for as long as you like! Thats not all though. You can even connect to up to 30 friends iTunes libraries if they also download the program and choose a username and password & agree to you having access to their library. And they can obviously listen to yours as well! The computers have to be running obviously to enable you to connect and listen.

This app. basically turns your iPhone into a ???GB iPhone instead of a paltry 8GB or 16GB!

It's available at the app. store on iTunes, its costs a very reasonable £2.39 and it took me 10 minutes to set up! Genius!

Event: Club Transmediale. Berlin. 22nd-31st January.

In addition to the art & digital media festival, 'Transmediale', there is also a musical version running in parallel called 'Club Transmediale'. How spoilt are those Berliners!

http://www.clubtransmediale.de/

News: The End's last night update.

Apparently, West Central St is being closed down for the night to allow the End to do a queue party for the people that might not get in!  And its gonna be around 24 hrs long and starts at 8pm.  The event itself is a rather steep £40, a last chance to grab some of those clubbing dollars so to speak!  It will be half price from 7am though.

Event: Transmediale Festival in Berlin. 28th Jan-1st Feb.

A great looking art & digital culture festival is taking place in Berlin over 5 days from 28th January - 1st February.
If your gonna be in Berlin that week check it out!
// Date: 28.01.09 - 01.02.09
// Venue: House of World Cultures, Berlin

Club Transmediale's sister festival transmediale starts its 22nd edition on January 28, 2009 under the theme "DEEP NORTH" at the House of World Cultures. It runs from January 28th to February 1st.

Transmediale is one of the leading festivals for art and digital culture internationally. On a yearly basis it presents advanced artistic positions reflecting on the socio-cultural impact of new technologies. Its program includes a conference, an exhibition, live performances, film and video programs and a variety of fringe events throughout Berlin.

With the festival theme Deep North transmediale.09 focusses on the global artistic, cultural, societal and philosophical consequences that the presumed imminent collapse of the polar ice barrier may trigger. Are we about to reach another historically succinct moment of no return leaving in its wake uncontrollable global transformations? Does climate change elicit cultural change, a shifting of extremes or a collapse in established, systemic and network norms?

News: New club for Berlin. Like they need it!!

Berlin already has the world’s best club scene with Berghain, Watergate, Weekend and countless other dancing holes, but on 14th February the city will get a plush new club in an abandoned electricity station (after all a club wouldn’t be Berlin club, without post-industrial decor and the threat of electrocution on the dancefloor).
Dice in Mitte is being touted as 2000 square metres of “state-of-the-art sound and lighting and cutting edge electronic sounds” with a large roof terrace that’s “perfect for after hours Sunday sessions.”Who wants to move to Berlin? With three rooms, 26 foot high ceilings and another state-of-the-art Funktion One soundsystem (the most expensive PA they’ve ever built apparently) and lighting built by the same crew that gave us ‘that’ famous Watergate lightway, Dice is set to take Berlin by storm. What’s more, the music programming of Dice is in collaboration with Minus’ booking agency Clonk, Get Physical’s Wilde Bookings and Backroom Entertainment.

News: Fabric 44 - John Tejada

Fabric 44 will be a heavily edited mix from Tejada, who is renowned for his studio prowess. Says the DJ, "I did edit the tracks quite a bit…to take it one step above of what you might hear when a DJ plays out. I wanted the whole track selection to turn into one piece of music: a techno-classical piece that has movements and moods from start to finish, similar to a conductor with a classical piece of music." The symphony will contain a host of tunes from Tejada's own Palette label, as well as two tunes from Hardwax in and among the rest.

Tracklist

01. Dave Hughes - Let's Do It

Event: The End prepares for its final ever night.

London’s The End club is set to close its famous metal doors forever on January 25th, with a final double dose of clubbing bliss. For the last few weeks the outside of The End has been headed with ‘Goodbye Baby’ on neon blue paint and Richie Hawtin, Loco Diceand Magdarecently played their last-ever party at the venue which kept going till 11am the next day. The final Saturday night swan song will see DJs Laurent Garnier, Layo & Bushwacka!, Mr. C, Erol Alkan, Ben Watt, Jimpster, Will Saul,Rory Phillipsand Don Mac throw down beats.
It’ll be an emotional farewell for a venue that has remained committed to underground electronic music since it first opened on 2nd December 1995.Of course, it wouldn’t be fitting to have a closing party without an afterparty and afterhour mongers Jaded have the honour of giving the soundsystem its last ever bleep in the adjorning AKA bar on Sunday morning from 5.30am.Raymundo Rodriguez and some very special guests will play (at a guess, it’ll be Garnier, Mr. C and Layo & Bushwacka!) at the afterparty which might go for 24 hours or longer. What will happen to the venue is up to its new owners, but no doubt it’ll become another bland Central London office space, with perhaps only the faintest aroma of human sweat about the place to indicate the energy that was expended by hundreds of thousands of dancers over its illustrious 13-year history.

Mix: Dapayk Live at Deeper Moods, Los Angeles. Nov 2008.

Niklas Worgt, better known to the music world as German-born producer and live act Dapayk Solo, has dabbled in multiple musical styles over the course of his 15-year career, with drum & bass, breakbeat, and tech-house being the most notable. For this exclusive, hour-long mix, Worgt gives us a live set from his November 9 show at the Deeper Moods party in Los Angeles, and since he's been crafting minimal techno cuts of late, he took the opportunity to show off his abilities in that genre with this mix. It seems he’s also is bent on introducing us to the dark side of dance music, with cut after cut of foreboding bass and creepy-sounding vocals.
Bring it on!

Mix: Scuba 10245 Dubstep Mix.

Under his Scuba guise, DJ, producer, and Hotflush Recordings curator Paul Rose delivers this hour-long, exclusive mix that's a comprehensive sampling of new dubstep sounds. Techno, electro, and atmospheric influences all collide with the genre in the form of tracks from Baby Ford, Sigha, Toasty, Untold, Martyn, and a few from Rose himself.Rose, who relocated from his native London to Berlin in 2007, released his much-praised debut full-length, A Mutual Antipathy, earlier this year. His production work, like his tastes as a DJ, isn't confined to straight dubstep, but rather looks to many different styles of music that could influence the genre. Catch him throwing his Berlin-based party SUB:STANCE on his off hours.

Technology: Mac compatible pocket-size DJ system Pacemaker gets makeover

A new version of the portable DJ system Pacemaker, for Mac and PC, will be cheaper and easier to use than its predecessor, and bring the product to the masses, said Swedish company Tonium on Tuesday.

The Pacemaker is a portable digital music player with extra features that allow DJs or would-be DJs to mix together two tracks playing simultaneously.

It's similar in shape and size to Sony's PlayStation Portable. The front of the device is dominated by a round display and a round touchpad, which is used to control the device and adjust sound effects. It also has a crossfade slider and a number of dedicated buttons, and an audio-out socket for connection to a sound system.

The biggest difference between the new version and the existing one is the user interface, which has been completely reworked.

One feature intended to make the device easier to use is auto beat match: It allows for two tracks with different number of beats per minute to be automatically synched by holding one button and pressing another, according to Andreas Larsson, sales manager at Tonium.

Two other differences are the size of the hard drive and the price of the unit. It stores 60GB, instead of 120GB, and will cost about $550 in the US, where it previously hasn't been available. The existing version would have cost about $800, according to Larsson.

"We think there is a large interest among users who want to do more with music, not just listen, and the new unit will lower the barrier of entry," said Larsson.

Larsson hopes the simplified user interface will also make it simpler for large chains to sell the Pacemaker, as they don't have the same time to spend on helping customers as specialty stores do.

The new unit will start shipping in April, and by that time more details will also be announced.

Owners of the existing version, which will continue to live on, will also get access to the improved user interface via software updates.

News: Macworld.

How disappointing was Macworld yesterday!

Updates to iLife & iWork and stuff. Mint! A new laptop which is only good if you're after a laptop which I'm not. The only iPhone news was that you can now download tracks from iTunes over the 3G network as oppose to only when in a wifi zone. Wow.

I think I now know why Steve Jobs didn't want to present that shower! A bit lame compared with the last couple of years! Oh well, its at least saved me spending a fortune like I have done in the last 18 months! Every cloud and all that!

Technology: Wunder Radio iPhone 3G App.

I downloaded this nifty little online radio app the other day from iTunes, and I'm pretty impressed with it and would heartily recommend it to anyone with an iPhone. It's called Wunder Radio and although it's a bit on the expensive side for an app at £3.49, its a really, really cool app. I can now listen to Anja Schneider's Radio Fritz 'Dance Under the Blue Moon' show from Berlin every Sat night now as well as live football commentary courtesy of BBC's Five Live show and all the BBC channels. There are literally thousands and thousands of worldwide radio shows, and the other night I was particularly enjoying a late night phone in show all the way from Barrow, Alaska!
£3.49 well spent!

Check it out. Click here for WunderRadio

News: Robert Henke - Atom/Document

When Robert Henke's name is mentioned, it's often as one-half of respected experimentalists Monolake. In January, however, he'll be working with another collaborator altogether—visual artist Christopher Bauder—when Atom/Document hits stores late in the month.

The record is the document of a performance by the duo in which Henke soundtracked Bauder's "morphing, flashing and flickering three-dimensional sculpture, [consisting]…of 64 moving, helium-filled balloons." Each balloon in the performance contained a "bright white LED," which Henke was able to turn off and on via his choices in triggering each piece of music that he prepared before the performance. (Bauder controlled the height of each balloon.) As such, each performance was unique and Atom/Document only reflects one possible version. Henke himself says that the result "is the most 'serious' album I created so far, and it marks a new coordinate in my musical universe, with its combination of noisy and rough industrial sounds, processed piano and distant drones."

Tracklist

01. [_flicker]
02. [quad_planar]
03. [shift_register]
04. [_convex]
05. [metropol]
06. [first_contact]
07. [diagonal]
08. [crossing]
09. [_exit]

Imbalance Computer Music will release Robert Henke's Atom/Document on January 20, 2009.

News: Florian Schneider leaves Kraftwerk!

End of an era? Most certainly!

Florian Schneider has officially left Kraftwerk, leaving only one remaining member in Ralf Hutter. A message on their website simply says:

"Florian is a great musician, always seeking the perfect sound through technology. Refined and perfected sounds and vocoders to impossible levels of perfection."

Which doesn't really explain that much to be honest!

The current line-up will continue their tour of South America supporting Radiohead and Schneider is not giving up music completely as he has other projects up his sleeve apparently for the future.

Event: Sonar Festival 2009

Dates for this years Sonar have been confirmed as well as prices. 125 Euros before the end of January, then they jump up to 140 Euros. I remember when it was 80 Euros for the full 3 day and 3 night ticket and the exchange rate was around 1.60 Euros to the pound, so the whole thing was around £50! And the line-ups were better!

Mix: Peter Van Hoesen LIVE @ Nyckelpiga, Brussels, Dec 2008

Another mix from Peter Van Hoesen from December, but this time its a LIVE set, from the event below, of all his own stuff, and very good it is too!

Peter Van Hoesen: Live at Nyckelpiga, December 2008

Mix: Marcel Dettmann RA 135 Mix.

This is the last Resident Advisor mix from 2008 by Berghain/Panorama Bar/Hardwax resident and all round 2008 techno star, Marcel Dettmann. Which if I'm being honest I found a little lacklustre on first listen. He's normally pretty spot on though so I'm gonna give it a couple more listens just to make sure! The tracklist looks like it should be an ace mix so its a tad confusing as to why I was so underwhelmed?

News: New website.

Keep an eye on this new website by a friend of mine. Its inspired by the halcyon days many of us shared at the legendary Orbit in Morley, Leeds. It's only got a few tracks on there so far, (one by yours truly) but I'm sure over the coming months there will be much more!
